What does your mind say about you?

All Posts, Personal Development

The mind is one of the most powerful elements of a persons being.  It has the ability to destroy a person and to make some one crumble to their knees, to reek havoc and chaos and stop a person in their tracks.  However, at the same time the mind can be trained and manipulated it can be taught to love its owner and create the most amazing results and successes.

What is your mind doing to you right now?  Is is letting you fulfil your dreams? Does it shout words of encouragement and positivity when things are tough?

In simple terms the mind is made up of the conscious and subconscious mind.  The subconscious stores memories from our distant past, these memories emerge at certain times in our life, making us react in a certain preconditioned manner, which is sometimes not appropriate.

Have you ever seen red or flown of the handle when someone has said something to you, only for them to think you are acting irrational, yet you have no real understanding why you are reacting that way at all?  Perhaps it is something from your childhood or a suppressed feeling coming to the fore.

If you are consciously wanting to create money and wealth for yourself but your subconscious mind is saying you don’t deserve to, then more often than 99.9% of the time your subconscious will win out.  You might not think you believe you are good enough, you might have been told at school you are average, that your family has never had a lot of money, that you always just get by on what you have, perhaps your parents were always in debt and you just don’t know any other way.

But let me tell you this, it doesn’t matter what you were told or brought up to believe as a child, if you start to believe in yourself NOW, others will believe in you too and soon you will start to see the results.

Below is a video link of my friend Cassie Strom…her video was sooooo good that I didn’t see the point in reinventing it.  Here she does a great video on self-limiting thoughts.  So here is a great big THANK YOU to the lovely Cassie for letting me use this clip.  I know many of you will already know Cassie’s stuff but if you haven’t yet subscribed to her, make sure you do, she is a real genuine gem….(and chewy has some talent too WOOF WOOF)

Now try this little task.

1. Grab a piece of paper and write down some of the limiting beliefs that people said to you as a child or whilst at high school.

These were some of mine:
Skinny,
Ugly,
Spotty,
Too Tall (huh…I am only 5ft3)
Stupid,

2. Now write down some of your achievements or things that make you positive, like films, music or a memory.

These are some of mine:
Good school grades,
Did well at University
I am a great mum
Bought my own home

3.) Now look at the list of negative comments for one last time, crumble the piece of paper up and throw it in the bin or rip it up, do what ever makes you feel good and then get rid if it forever. (Don’t burn it because you really shouldn’t play with fire!)

These negative thoughts are what I like to call CRUMPLE BUTTONS, they are words that people say to us and which make us feel small and insecure but these limiting thoughts get planted in our subconscious for the rest of time unless we release them.

Start practising positive thoughts. Whenever a voice comes in your head that is self-limiting say straight back to it… ‘NO I CAN DO THIS’ and grab you list of positive thoughts to remind you how amazing you really are.

Here is my happy song…I don’t know why I just love ELO and I love the 1970s.

Now you know what I rock to when I am alone in my bedroom.

Let me know how you practice positive thinking and what your happy thoughts are.

Peace, love and happiness

Happy song, Beth! I’m rocking out as I write this comment! This reminder of our subconscious limitations is so important. I constantly run across this problem with clients who are struggling to reach their next level of success. We store those hurts so easily and are so seldom taught how to get rid of them. Thank you for putting this out there so more people can move in the right direction!

Crumple Buttons… okay I’m gonna borrow that one! That’s so true! I can be cruising along, doing pretty darn good, and someone can say something that creates a mental cascade in my mind that just takes my footing right out from under me. Crumple is such the right word, its like we collapse inward and that strength we were walking in is somehow just “poof” gone. I’ve actually been dealing with a lot of these lately, and in particular some people that just seem really darn good at pushing exactly those buttons. Thanks for the inspiration!

    Beth,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and you offer a lot of value in this post. So many times we are our worst enemies and critics. People usually have better thing to say about us more than we say about ourselves. Maybe it’s because we are always with ourselves and we know all the flaws.

Having a mindset that you love who you are will take you to the next level. We all have hangups but if we analyze who we are with all our faults and are willing to change, that will determine the person we will become.

I like your post but sometimes we need to get down on ourselves! If something isn’t working, then we need to take a hard look at it to find the reason and 9 times out of 10 it’s us. So even though we are what we think, we need to analyze it in order to change and have a positive mindset for the future.

    Thanks for sharing!

Boy this is so true. I know from personal experience growing up with all sorts of negative things flying at me. It has taken most of my life to sort all of that out. It certainly gets easier the more I know and I appreciate your input into the conversation.

I have found for me that the thing that changed my life was simply feeling that I deserved to be completely loved by God…that He wants to share His affection with me. I was able to transfer that from theory to reality a number of years ago and it was the most transforming time in my life…I have just begun to see how big the results of that shift in my life truly are.

The mind is a great servant but a horrible master.

Great reminder on how important it is to take ownership of our thoughts.

You can literally rewire your mind to shift from being your worst critic to your biggest cheerleader.

One couple had a mental ceiling of $150K a year and when they rewired their mind they broke $400K a year. Rewiring works best right before you go to bed and right when you wake up.

So what do I do to train my mind. I am always up for a good brain wash every now and again. I just wish I could take my brain out and ring it out LOL! For me I carry around a queue cards of quotes that I just love along with some affirmations in my pocket. When I feel the need I take them out and read them, sometimes I do not even need to take them out. I just touch them in my pocket or even just think about them being there and that works for me too.

No one can push my “Crumple Buttons” quite like my two kids. They have a patent on them! The other day started out gorgeous. All it took was one call from my daughter and I folded inward.

It’s amazing how many negative records we carry from childhood. In the last four months I’ve been monitoring my thoughts and there is a lot of housecleaning to do!

Music is a HUGE part of overcoming the negative spiral. I turn on anything from Bach to Springsteen and crank it up until the windows rattle. That feeds my soul and drags me out of the pits.

We are constantly told to read 10 pages of a good book and listen to 15 minutes of a good audio program each day. It’s all about reprogramming our mind to tell us GOOD things! 25,000 a month! Are you kidding me? Why so low? I learned from attending seminar with T. Harv Eker a neat little trick to help reprogram your Money Blueprint.

Do this everybody: Write down how much you want to make on a monthly or yearly basis. Keep it a number like a whole number like 10,000; 25,000, etc. Now, add a zero to the end of your number. That is where you need to program your money blueprint.

    Excellent article Beth.

I have been following this limited belief stuff for years after reading a book by Jack Black in the 90′s.

However, I have now found a method of meditating using a system called Holosync. It comes in CD format and plays sounds into your head with different specific frequencies into the left and right ear simultaneously. This apparently helps to create new neural pathways between the left and right cortex so that you can start thinking in a more whole brain way like the great geniuses Einstein etc.

The cd course can last for years and I am now on stage2 which has my own affirmations embedded submliminaly into the background. Its extremely powerfull stuff and I have gone from being a bit of a hot head, to someone more calm and methodical in my thinking.

You’ve made a very important point here, Beth. During my 35 year career as a psychotherapist, I saw endless examples of tragic lift scripts whereby we tend to recapitulate the negative patterns from early childhood.

I came to refer to this as “the internal tyranny” and strongly believe that it operates to some degree in all of us, whether or not we are aware of it.

I’ve personally found that one of the most effective ways to liberate ourselves from this “walking in blindness,” as the ancient Greeks called it, is through the practice of mindfulness meditation.
