Generate Targeted Leads
Perhaps you have heard it before, perhaps you haven’t. The money is in the list. Whilst this is very true, it doesn’t matter how long your list is if you haven’t been working on building a list that is targeted, specific to your niche and services, and with whom you have built a good relationship and rapport. To do this you need to be constantly providing good content and valuable information to your list.
The great thing about blogs is that by the time someone stumbles across your content they will, (in the majority of cases) be interested in what they are reading and what you have on offer. And now that you have them here, you might as well make the most of them and ask them to join your list.
So how can we do this? Well…, the very nature of blogs is that they offer multiple abilities to grab your readerships attention. There is no magic formula, some methods work better than others, sometimes, one strategy might seem to be more successful than another. But in the end it comes down to a bit of luck, a bit of variety, never giving up, having faith and the law of averages. Most of all find out what works for you and stick with it.
Here are a few examples of how I generate leads from my blog:
I have an opt-in box placed on the right hand side of my blog. In my experience having an opt-in box in full view without scrolling down the page has the most success, as does having arrows pointing to where you need the person to enter their name and email address. Make sure you are providing them with something FREE in exchange for their details. This could be a free e-book, free video series, free course, or just to being kept up to date with new posts or to sign up for a newsletter.
I use a simple plug-in called action-popup. This is the box that pops up when a visitor has been on your blog for a number of seconds, or when they try to exit your blog. Again, provide them with value and always thank them for stopping by your blog. You can customise action pop up, with colours, size, by adding pictures, videos you name it. You can also customise who can see it, how often it appears, and when and where it appears. For more information on action-popup please click here
Another way to generate leads is by inserting a standard text at the end of my posts. Depending on what they post is about I will add a different text so for example at the bottom of this page you will see there is a link to a blog design service that I am an affiliate for. I see a large percentage of my leads entering their details after they have read one of my articles and it is super quick and easy to do.
There are lots of ways you can optimise your blog, including adding banners in the widget section of your blog. Be creative and always add value. Ask yourself the question. If you were on someone’s blog what value would you expect to see in order that you would hand over your name and email address?
I would love to have your comments on whether you have found this useful and what other list building strategies you use on your blog.

Beth you have provided several valuable items. I have been struggling with how to get attractive Opt In’s on my blog. I think you might have given me an idea. Thanks for being so giving.

Hey Nelson,
Glad I turned your light bulb on! Sometimes I just use publisher to make the op-tin boxes and just add the html. I am know designer but it seems to do the trick and is easy and cheap.

Beth,
You’ve listed some great pointers about what to have on your blog to invite readers to connect with you.
I agree the optin box at the top is best placement.
Good ideas!

You’ve really given us all something to think about, Beth.
Monetizing our blogs is really what it’s all about at the end of the day. You’ve got to take advantage of the traffic you generate. Give them every opportunity to get deeper into your flow.
By the way, I thought I knew pretty much everything about blog setups, but I really knew very little about the “action pop-up” (I guess that’s the same as “exit pop-ups”?). So this was a wonderful tutorial for me, too.
Thanks again, Beth. You’ve been a great leader out here!

Thank you David, that is a really nice thing to say. I am always glad that I can add value and if you have anything you would like me do a post about I would be more than happy.

Hey Beth,
Just want to thank you for this article. I’ve been thinking about starting a blog, but been apprehensive about spam and trying to filter through what’s worthy. However, I guess that’s just one downfall on marketing on the internet, right? I know more people are using the internet nowadays for what we used to require us to hop in our car and drive to a certain store. I’m going to check out your other articles. Thanks!

You really shouldn’t worry about spam. It certainly shouldn’t be a reason to stop you doing what you want to do in business. There are certain plugins you can use to stop and filter spam.

I think that now since there are so many great plugins for our blog, it makes it easier to maintain it. Thanks for sharing your experience and tips!

Enjoyed your articles. Yup that opt in list is important but it can take a bit of experimenting to find the right combination of forms and displays to get the results you want. I tried all different styles and formats and for me what ended up working was a plugin called Pippity. It’s not free, but I love it’s flexibility and considering my list has trippled in just the few weeks since I invested in it, well worth the price.
