Your best friend phones you out of the blue and announces that they have a gift for you. You immediately start to visualise the shape, size and texture of the gift, wrapped up in its beautiful wrapping paper with a delicate bow tied around it for decoration.
You haven’t see your friend for almost 4 months now but somehow, now that you know that your friend has something waiting for you, you just can’t wait to find out when the next train is leaving. You grab your coat, pack a small suitcase with clothes for the weekend and invite yourself over.
You arrive on your friend’s doorstop in eager anticipation, both wanting to see your good friend, but also longing to rip open the wrapping paper to uncover your gift. All kinds of feelings and thoughts flash through your mind as you try to work out what your gift could possibly be!
Once inside you make loose conversation with your best friend, eagerly awaiting the conversation that will provide you with an in road to where you get to discuss the unwrapping of your gift.
The moment comes, and you look longingly at this mysterious box, full of potential and great optimism. You pull at the ribbon and as it unravels itself, you move on to the next task of removing the wrapping paper and finally you get the great satisfaction of opening up the box.
Inside you find a clock, but not any clock, a special clock that has its own unique manual and you eagerly start to flick through the instructions and imagine working out how to use this unique gift…the clock is already ticking and tocking, it almost mirrors the sound of your heartbeat and you look at the face of the clock and you see that it shows the present time, in fact it always shows the present time.
Now imagine if at birth you were also given a gift, in fact you were given many…not ones wrapped up in pretty bows and wrapping paper but ones that were deep inside your DNA, your soul, your very being. Why wouldn’t you want to passionately un-wrap your ‘REAL’ gifts, in the same way you would eagerly unwrap a physical gift from your friends and family.
You wouldn’t blink an eye at having to read an instruction manual for your latest gadget to work out how to use it…so why wouldn’t you do the same with your natural gifts.
Working out how to use our natural gifts is much the same as working out how to use a fancy gadget, once we know what we are good at, what we are passionate about and what we want to do with our gifts we can accomplish so much.
Remember you have everything you need to succeed right there inside of you just waiting to be unwrapped. It is always present just like the time on the clock.

Great Post Beth. I have finally desided to use my gifts. I wish I had the couage to do it sooner. What a difference it makes in your life. You’re righ that all we have to do is look inside and we know what our gifts are.

This is a great post to help us wake up and realize that we should be doing what we are passionate about in life and to not compromise.
I just learned a great game to play to find out how you can make money doing what you love to do. I’ll share it in one of my upcoming posts.
I really feel that not many people are doing what they love to do, only getting by to pay the bills.

Thank Karen, I totally agree that people aren’t doing what they love. Their souls must be screaming at them. It is such a shame that people feel pressured to living a very different life to the one they were supposed to. It takes a lot of effort to wake up but I am glad that I have.

Great analogy! it’s so true, people are unaware sometimes of the fact of just how precious their time on this earth is and they always think they can just start tomorrow or say to themselves, I will get to work on my passion when I’m done doing this or that and their gift is wasted by procrastination and indecision!

Absolutely Niko, I think sometime people are afraid of not being perfect when in actual facts all this really does just delays people ever getting started. I say get out there and just do it…don’t worry what others will think, just follow your passions and see what opportunities will follow

You have hit on some realy truths here. For many of us (especially women), it takes years to wake up to our own gifts. We are excellent givers, we spend our lives nurturing others, and that is a true gift. But when it comes to receiving, we are not so skilled. We deflect compliments, don’t ask for help when we need it, and feel uncomfortable when others want to give to us. We need to learn that for every giver, there must be a receiver. So by waking up to our own gifts, we are also giving back to others. Thanks for your thought-provoking post!

So glad you enjoyed the post Laurei, it is hard as mothers and fathers to sometimes hang on to who they really are when they are so tied up with helping others, but if we stop doing the things we love and are good at we will never really be Happy. I really enjoyed this post Beth, it was not was I was initially expecting it to be about but I was pleasantly pleased by the analogy.
Time is such a valuable commodity, it’s unfortunate that their’s only 24 hours in a day. Just wish I could have more of it
