Are you fed up with your twitter feed being full of links, spam, useless information and down right nonsense? Would you like to be able to see what your friends are talking about and sharing. Would you like to be able to actually find real people having real conversation on twitter? If the answer is Yes, then you definitely need Twit Cleaner.
I know it might be the opposite of what you have been taught, but quality is so much better than quantity when it comes to the people you follow on twitter. It really is important to choose your followers carefully. I am not preaching, I am speaking from twitter experience.
Last week I stumbled across Twit Cleaner, I would have probably stumbled across it much earlier given all the recommendations there out there in the Twitter-verse but my twitter feed was nothing short of a garbled tangle of people shouting at me and selling me things.
What is Twit Cleaner?
Put simply, Twit Cleaner analyses the people you follow and breaks down your results in to an easy to understand report. The report gives you insight into the people you follow allowing you to make an informed decision about whether you still want to follow them or not. You will be able to find out who is wasting your time, who the spammers are, the bots and the boring folk! YAWN….
Not only will Twit Cleaner help you clear up all that worthless noise that is going on, but you will also get tips on how you can improve your own Twitter presence and it will help you focus your time and energy. When you start going through your custom created report and start to clean things up, it is going to be a lot easier and quicker to communicate with the people you want to and not the people you don’t.
What will my report look like?
After running you report you are going to get a break down of information based on the following areas:

Under each of the headings you will find each of the twitter accounts that have been identified as potential rubbish. Remember this is not an exact science and as marketers we will from time to time, send links, sometimes duplicate links. We may be absent for a while, we may use feeds and sometimes send out and retweet quotes. Obviously we are all very interesting so we don’t need to worry about that one!! But you get the drift. Don’t be upset if your friends show up on the report.
My suspects have been identified now what should I do?
Its time to decide who to unfollow. By clicking on the profile pictures a a line will be placed through their profile. If you make a mistake simply click again and the profile will be back. Twit Cleaner takes care to unfollow slowly just the way Twitter likes it, so you never have to worry about using up all your API calls (the number of ‘actions’ Twitter allows you to do per hour).
If you have a lot of people to unfollow, it is going to take some time to start to see some decent results in your twitter stream. I recommend that you run a fresh Twit Cleaner report every day for about 5 days and unfollow the maximum amount of people you can for each day. Twit Cleaner will tell you when you have unfollowed the limit for that day, so again you don’t need to worry about Twitter getting cross with you.
Things to Be Aware of!
- Your friends might show up in your report. Don’t worry you get the final say who you follow and unfollow, we all display annoying activity from time to time so don’t feel pressured to unfollow anyone you don’t want to. (But if you unfollow me, I am going to cry!)
- When you unfollow people your follower count may also drop. This happens because spammers typically set up scripts that unfollow anyone that unfollows them. Whilst you might think this matters, it really doesn’t, you have lost nothing, remember its quality not quantity and now you have the means to concentrate on the people that REALLY matter.
OK so that’s it…in a few days you will have a cleaned up stream and you will be able to communicate with your friends again.
Happy Cleaning,

Wow Beth!
What an amazing review. Thank you so much.
As you point out – at the moment, the limit is 500 unfollows per day, but you’re welcome to come back as often as you like to get your tweetstream back under control.
I find starting with the high volume people, followed by the aggressive spammers (the first category) makes the quickest difference. Obviously those who’ve left Twitter can be left until last (since you never see anything from them anyway).
Thanks again for the post, it’s most excellent of you.
Kind Regards
Si Dawson

This looks very cool indeed! I completely agree about the quality vs quantity. Like most people when I first started I just looked to build enough followers so as not to be embarrassed. Later on I went back and did a complete house cleaing. My number of followers dropped substantially, but the quality of the content far outweighed that and now I’m pretty picky about who I follow.

Hey Marquita,
So true, I think everyone thinks it is a race to get as many followers as possible. I admit it does add social proof, but it certainly isn’t everything.

Hi Beth,
As usual you are providing great value to your readers. I am definitely going to download the The Twit Cleaner because of your recommendation. My twitter account is not huge and not too “spammy”, and my numbers reflect mostly quality followers. However, I would like to thank you for providing the report we would expect from Twit Cleaner because I would like to get a peek into the real activity that is happening in my account and filter out any activity I don’t know about!
Thanks again,

hi Beth,
I haven’t come across this one. I regularly work on cleaning up my Twitter account but had never found a tool that can weed out the noisy, spammy accounts. I will definitely take a look. given that I have over 30,000 followers, this may be useful. I use lists extensively and hashtags to keep track of conversations that I want to follow.
Thanks for the tips.

Hello Beth! This might be exactly what a lot of us need on twitter. It’s so easy to end up with spammy followers and followers we’ve got nothing in common with. I hate clutter of any kind, whether at home or online. A lot of twitter followers and facebook friends are just that: clutter. Time to clean house on these social networks so we can make space for real relationships. Thanks for the tip!

Hi Miriam,
You’re welcome, hope it helps. It sure helped me clear my twitter stream. Another good way of getting rid of clutter on twitter is to get rid of those that don’t have a face…whilst there are some good brands and companies to follow in what ever niche you are in, you will also be amazed by the number of icons that depict a wad of cash or a dollar sign etc. It’s a great way to spot spam, without ever having a closer look at the profile.
